My Journey

I can't tell you the exact date my journey started. It's been awhile. I know I wanted to own my own business back in high school. But, back then entrepreneurship was never encouraged to me.

It was (and still is) the typical formula of: graduate high school, go to college and get a degree, find a job with insurance benefits and a retirement plan. Not that there is anything wrong with that formula. Most people would prefer that route. For me, it was never satisfying.

I changed majors in college from Computer Programmer to Business Management. Changing majors is normal, but part of it was because I really didn't know what I wanted to do for a career. I couldn't pinpoint my passion.

I graduated and ended up with a good job in sales. I gained great experience and developed long-term relationships, but something was still missing.

After looking at my Evernote app the other day I was reminded of something. It's been at least five years since I really started to dive in and get serious about finding work I love and owning my own business.

When I opened the app for the first time in five years, my last note-to-self was a list of books I had on my wish list. Among them were "No More Mondays" by Dan Miller and "The $100 Startup" by Chris Guillebeau. Both books are about owning your own business.

Today, I can officially say that I own both of those books and I'm also all-in on making the jump to entrepreneurship.

Why did it take so long? The reason why so many people never make the jump. Fear.

Fear of the unknown. Fear of making a change. Fear of leaving a comfortable job with good benefits, 401k and a good salary.

The other reason was I didn't know for sure what I wanted to do. Those books always recommend following your passion. Doing something that doesn't feel like work. They would pose questions like: If you didn't need money to survive, what kind of work would you love to do and not get paid for it? Once you answered that question, pursue it.

My life in retail and my recent work with the local Chamber of Commerce brought me to this point. I love Marketing. Specifically, Digital Marketing. I also love working with Small Business owners. I want them to succeed. I genuinely care.

Each business I work with, I'm going to treat them like it's my own business.

You will probably see the quote above in several different places on my website and that's because it's important to repeat. If you, as a business owner, want to work with me I want do everything I can to help you succeed. If you trust my work, I will give it my all using the strategies I've learned.

I don't know what my life will look like five years from now or what my wish list of books will be at that time. What I do know is I won't have regret when it comes to this area of my life. That's because I took the risk and I'll do everything I can to make it work.

My journey to this blog post was a long one with some sleepless nights. But, when I hit "publish" after I type this sentence I am going to do it with a renewed excitement as I start this new chapter in my life.
